2018 MFNWT winners Greg Geoffrey and Chad Dalrymple

The Mattagami Frist Nation kicked off the 2018 season in high gear with a reminder to all anglers of the NOWT Championship Tournaments for 2019 and 2020. The NOWT has been working endlessly to take the Trail to the next level. The announcement of a Championship Tournament with an incredible prize package from major sponsors Princecraft, Mercury Marine, and J&B Cycle & Marine has set the tone for the circuit over the next couple of years.

Anglers were welcomed back to the Mattagami First Nation at the MFN Community Centre. Those who braved the cold north wind and rain Friday warmed up to a hot pasta dinner and greetings from tournament colleagues.

This year’s event had 113 registered teams competing for one of the top 25 cash payouts, with all eyes on the top prize of up to $10,000.

The morning of Day 1 had participants and volunteers bundled up, trying to keep warm in the sub-zero and windy morning. Clear skies, cold air temperature wind gusts over 20 km/hr from the north east would prove to be a challenge for some, and opportunity for others.

Top 3 Teams on Day 1 (Weight in lbs):

  1. Chad Dalrymple & Greg Geoffrey (15.44)
  2. Luc Audet & Dan Breault (14.80)
  3. Jamie Robinson & Terry Bernath (14.38)

On the second day of competition anglers had to adjust to the changing weather.  Winds shifted from the northeast direction on Saturday to an overnight east wind until finally the south east wind by tournament start.  The day would start off warmer with clear skies, until clouds, increasing wind even some rain by the end of the tournament hours.

Anglers who adjusted to the conditions and picked up on the pattern were rewarded.

Top 3 Teams on Day 2 (Weight in lbs):

  1. Dany Vienneau & Roger Vienneau (15.78)
  2. Dan Guillemette & Alex Guillemette (13.52)
  3. Cory Nephin & Shane Turcotte (13.18)

Consistency paid off for the top finishers, while a mix of good/bad weights on each day worked out for others!

In the end, the winner of the 2018 MFN Walleye Tournament, with a total weekend weight of walleyes of 27.91 pounds are the team of Chad Dalrymple and Greg Geoffry. Congratulations!
